Congestion management

The Denver Regional Council of Governments works with local, state and national partners to manage traffic congestion. This includes projects to reduce congestion, improve system efficiency or help people and businesses avoid congestion.

To manage congestion, DRCOG focuses on reducing the demand for travel, also called travel demand management, and improving the efficiency of traffic operations, also known as the Congestion Mitigation program.

Performance management

DRCOG coordinates with the Colorado Department of Transportation, the Regional Transportation District and other relevant stakeholder to integrate performance measure goals, objectives and plans into its planning process.

DRCOG will direct investments in the Regional Transportation Plan and Transportation Improvement Program towards projects to support these targets.

Regional traffic count program

DRCOG staff rely on traffic count data to write effective plans. The regional traffic county program has collected data on traffic volumes since 2010.

A traffic count measures the number of cars using a particular road each day. This information helps staff plan for the road. For example, this data may determine what kind of roadway improvements are possible on the road.
