Aging abuse prevention

Each year, many older adults face abuse, neglect and exploitation. The Area Agency on Aging Ombudsman Program work with adult protection agencies — such as the state health department, law enforcement and legal professionals to support affected residents in care facilities.

The Ombudsman Program, mandated by the federal government, ensures that the rights of these residents are respected and met.

The Area Agency on Aging sits on all of the adult protection review teams in each of the eight counties DRCOG serves and attends the Colorado Coalition of Elder Rights and Adult Protection monthly meeting.

Acting as advocates for residents, ombudsmen educate, residents, their families and facility staff about the rights of residents in long-term care facilities.

In addition, staff organizes safety seminars and trainings to educate older adults on avoiding scams and reporting concerns. Elder abuse prevention training is provided to staff members in nursing homes and assisted living residences, aiming to prevent abuse before it occurs.

Mandatory elder abuse reporting

As of July 1, 2014, certain professional groups are required to report suspected mistreatment of at-risk elders. Review the state law and required training for mandatory reporters.
